Transition Notes

View sample transition plan (PDF file) - thanks to Colin Slater

This event has a total of seven transitions, inclusive of the event start and finish. The transitions, and the relevant notes are:

Event Start
The event will start at 7:30am at 50F Katherine Mansfield Drive. Event registration is between 6:30am and 7:00am. Once event briefing has been completed, all support crew and vehicles are to leave the event start area and proceed direct to set up their competitor’s event equipment. Ideally the run to cycle transition will be set up prior to race registration, so supporters should be able to proceed direct to the cycle to mountain run transition. A marshal will be on hand to oversee all the equipment left at the first transition.

Road Run to Road Cycle Transition
It is recommended that the Road Run to Road Cycle transition is set up prior to event registration. This is so that once support crews have left the start area, they can proceed direct to the Road Cycle to Mountain Run Transition. At the Road Run to Road Cycle Transition, support crews are to set up their competitor’s cycle equipment and associated clothing (shoes etc) and food. The equipment is to be set up in numerical order.

There will be a marshal on hand to oversee all equipment left at the transition.

Once the equipment has been set up, support crews are to proceed direct to the Road Cycle to Mountain Run transition.

Competitors will start the event and will make their way to the Road Run to Road Cycle transition. Here they will transition into the cycle stage. They may wish to leave behind running shoes etc. All gear left behind will be collected by the event marshal and will be available at the event end.

This means that competitors should plan on using two sets of running shoes for this event (one for the first Road Run stage, and the other for the Mountain Run stage). This is the same as the start of the Coast to Coast, where competitors use cycling shoes for the cycling section of the race.

Support crews must not follow their competitors on the cycle course. All cyclists must be self sufficient for repairs etc during the cycle stages of the event.

Road Cycle to Mountain Run Transition
This transition is the first time that support crews will see their competitors since the event registration. Support crew will assist their competitors from the road cycle to the mountain run. Once their competitor has left the area, the support crew can leave to attend to the Mountain Run to Road Cycle transition. To enable this to happen, support crews must park their cars on the northern (Te Marua) side of Parks Line.

Support crews and their vehicles are not permitted at all on the Tunnel Gully or Rimutaka Incline Walkway areas. Support Crews must proceed direct to the next transition to Cross Creek.

All Mountain Run competitors must carry the following equipment as a minimum:

  • First Aid Kit
  • Emergency Blanket
  • Water
  • Suitable clothing (polyprop and jacket depending on weather)

Spot checks will be made as the competitors enter the run section.

Mountain Run to Road Cycle Transition
The Mountain Run will finish at the Cross Creek / Western Lake Road intersection. Supporters cars must be parked on the left hand side of Western Lake Road when facing north, and must be parked north of the Cross Creek / Western Lake Road intersection. This is the one transition where supporters cars and cyclists will be travelling in the same direction. ALL SUPPORTERS VEHICLES MUST LEAVE THIS AREA WITH EXTREME CARE as they will be pulling into the same road area where cyclists are coming through. Supporters will have PLENTY of time to get to the Cycle to Kayak transition on State Highway 53 so there is no need to rush.

This is one area where supporters vehicles have to give way to cyclists. MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO.

Support crews must not follow their competitors on the cycle course. All cyclists must be self sufficient for repairs etc during the cycle stages of the event.

Cycle to Kayak Transition
This transition will take place at the Ruamahanga River access on State Highway 53. Cyclists must dismount as soon as they leave State Highway 53 and walk their bikes to the kayak get in. Team members can tag their team member at the State Highway 53 / Ruamahanga access intersection. The accessway to the Ruamahanga River is a 4wd track with cattle stops hence we do not want people riding their road bikes over this.

The 4wd track will be servicing two-way traffic (people dropping off their competitors kayaks while others are leaving to get to the Kayak to Cycle transition). Be sensible and exercise care and courtesy at all times. Low speeds (less than 10km/hr always) and make way for all competitors – it is their event.

For the kayak section, helmets are not required. All kayakers must have the following however:

  • Personal Flotation Device (lifejacket)
  • Flotation bags or similar device within the rear of the kayak (as per C2C requirements)

It is recommended that competitors take appropriate clothing, duct tape, food and water with them.

Support crews may assist their competitors into the water.

Kayak to Cycle Transition
This transition will take place at the Kahuatara Road overbridge on the Ruamahanga River. Competitors may be assisted from the water by their support crews and assisted onto the cycle leg.

As with all transitions, supporters must exercise care when exiting the transition area as they will be using the same exit as the competitors.

Support crews must not follow their competitors on the cycle course. All cyclists must be self sufficient for repairs etc during the cycle stages of the event.

Please note – this transition is occurring on private land and as such please respect that the owners have given us permission to use this land. Ensure that the gate is shut at all times and if there is stock in the paddock do not worry or run the stock down.

Cycle to Run Transition
This transition will take place on Princess Street, just before the intersection with Princess Street and State Highway 53 (Kitchener Street). Cyclists will cycle in on Jellicoe Street from Pirinoa and then turn into Dublin Street to meet with Princess Street.

The cyclist will dismount their cycle, walk / jog across State Highway 53 / Kitchener Street and run the remaining 500m(ish) to the finish at the Martinborough Brewing Company. A marshal will be on hand to keep an eye on the cycles until the competitor or the support crew can pick up the bike. All cyclists must dismount at this transition stage.

Support crews are able to park in Princess and New York Streets. The transition area must be kept clear however.

Event Finish
The event will finish at the Martinborough Brewing Company, New York Street, Martinborough. Competitors must exercise caution when crossing Kitchener Street (the road that runs from Featherston). Pedestrian rules apply. All vehicles have the right of way.
