Event Rules
General
- Any athlete who withdraws from the event must notify the marshal at the point of withdrawal that they have exited.
- Competitors event numbers must be visible at all times
- Competitors must lodge the name and contact phone number (cell phone) of their support crew at event registration.
Run Stages
- A first aid kit, emergency blanket, water and suitable clothing will be required equipment for all athletes on the mountain run. Personal lighting is recommended but not compulsory.
- No supporters vehicles will be allowed on the Rimutaka Incline walkway or at any stage of the mountain run. Supporters will assist their competitors at Maymorn Hall, and will then meet them again at the Cross Creek exit of the Rimutaka Incline walkway.
Cycle Stages
- Cycle helmets are compulsory for all cycle legs within the event.
- Drafting is permitted on all kayaking and cycling legs. Bunch riding cyclists must keep left and must not block the road and prevent safe traffic movement.
- Cyclists completing the cycle leg after the hours of darkness are required to have suitable lighting front and rear.
- All cyclists must dismount after turning into the Ruamahanga River entrance. The access-way is gravel and includes cattle stops.
- Supporters vehicles must not give assistance to event competitors during the cycle stages. Competitors are expected to be self sufficient for the event.
Kayak Stages
- If requested by the event organisers, kayaking certificates or an exemption from the event organisers will be required for all kayakers who are paddling on the Ruamahanga River. Copies must be produced at event registration or mailed through beforehand. The organisers will accept proof of entry to another event (i.e. a link to an online (web) results list) where a kayaking leg has been completed.
- All kayakers must wear an approved (NZ Standards Approved) floatation device. Kayak helmets are not required for the kayak section of the event.
- For safety reasons, all kayaks must have rear air bags as a minimum. Sea kayaks with storage compartments that have sealed lids will be exempt.
- A cut-off of 5pm will be enforced for the beginning of the kayak stage. No competitor will be allowed to start the kayak section after 5pm on event day.
Event Management
- We will not be requesting road closures. Competitors must all road rules including keep left at all times in cycle and run stages.
- Where marshals are used at intersections, they will not be required to stop traffic for competitors. Marshals are there to indicate direction only. Competitors must obey all road rules and give way to traffic where required.
- The runners will have a mountain-bike following the final competitor on the mountain run.
- Marshals will be recording the numbers of athletes as they enter and exit each stage. If for any reason a competitor exits the event without completing, the nearest marshal must be informed.
- Remember, marshals are there and have volunteered so that you have compete in this event. Don’t give them a hard time no matter how irritated you are feeling.
At any stage, if there is a problem, note it and see the organisers at the end of the event. DON’T hassle the marshal.
